How to Build a Second Brain With AI

By AI Free Skills·8 min read·Updated Jun 21, 2026

The "Second Brain" concept, popularized by Tiago Forte, is about externalizing your knowledge into a system you can trust. AI supercharges every step of this process — from capture to creative output.

The PARA Method + AI

Organize everything into four categories:

  • Projects — Active tasks with deadlines. AI helps: "Review my current projects and suggest priorities based on deadlines and impact."
  • Areas — Ongoing responsibilities. AI helps: "Here are my areas of responsibility. What am I neglecting?"
  • Resources — Reference material for future use. AI helps: "Summarize this article and tag it for my [topic] resource folder."
  • Archive — Completed items. AI helps: "What from my archive is relevant to this new project?"

AI-Powered Capture

Capture everything interesting without worrying about organization:

  • Forward emails to your notes app
  • Screenshot interesting content
  • Voice-record ideas (AI transcribes later)
  • Save articles and highlights

Then weekly, use AI: "Here are my captures from this week: [PASTE]. Organize them into my PARA system. Suggest which are actionable (Projects), which are ongoing concerns (Areas), which are reference material (Resources), and which should be archived."

AI-Powered Distillation

The most valuable step is distilling information into your own understanding:

"I just read/learned about [TOPIC]. Here are my raw notes: [PASTE]. Help me distill this into: 1) One-sentence summary, 2) Three key takeaways, 3) How this connects to what I already know about [RELATED TOPIC], 4) One action I can take based on this."

AI-Powered Expression

The goal of a second brain is creative output:

  • "I need to write about [TOPIC]. Search my notes and find all relevant material I've collected."
  • "Based on my notes about [TOPIC A] and [TOPIC B], what unique connections or insights could I share?"
  • "Help me turn these research notes into a blog post / presentation / proposal."

Getting Started

  1. Choose your tool: Notion, Obsidian, or Roam Research
  2. Set up the PARA structure
  3. Start capturing everything for 1 week
  4. Use AI to organize at the end of the week
  5. Build the habit: 15 minutes daily for processing, 1 hour weekly for review
